The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the tragic loss of Deputy Levi Vargas, who passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the age of 30. Deputy Vargas was a dedicated and respected member of the department, serving the people of Los Angeles County with professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment.
Deputy Vargas began his career in law enforcement in 2015 when he joined the LASD as a Custody Assistant. With determination and focus, he advanced through the ranks, graduating from Academy Class 413 and becoming a sworn deputy. Over the years, he served in multiple assignments and was most recently assigned to the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community alike.
Tragically, Deputy Vargas’s life was cut short while participating in the annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay race, a long-standing law enforcement tradition that spans approximately 120 miles from Baker, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada. During this physically demanding event, Deputy Vargas suffered a sudden medical emergency. Despite the immediate response and medical care provided, he did not survive. His loss has left a deep void within the department and among those who knew him.
Deputy Vargas was widely recognized for his professionalism, compassion, and dedication to public service. Beyond his work, he was a loyal friend, a supportive colleague, and an inspiring presence in the lives of those around him. His participation in events like the Baker to Vegas race reflected his commitment not only to law enforcement but also to teamwork, camaraderie, and community engagement.
He is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and extended family. The LASD has expressed support to his loved ones during this difficult time and has encouraged the community to honor his legacy and service.
